Resumé Here, at the beginning of the 21st century, it has become clear that knowledge is the raw material that will drive development for the foreseeable future. Countries able to control and produce this resource - based to a large degree on higher education and research - will have a clear competitive advantage in the global market. Unfortunately, there is also a dark side: some countries may be left even further behind, further increasing the disparity in the world.
