3. Meetings of Directors General

Each Presidency organises a meeting of Directors General of Vocational Training to promote cooperation in vocational training in the European Union and to discuss ongoing and future policy initiatives from Member States and the European Commission.

Themes:

The directors general meeting will in particular focus on the following main topics:

A strengthened European cooperation in vocational education and training to promote transparency and mutual recognition of qualifications and competencies.

Common approaches to quality in vocational training and the recommendations from the European Forum on Quality.

Follow-up and implementation of the European Commission's "Communication on lifelong learning" and the European Council's decisions on lifelong learning at national and European level.

Participants:

Directors General of Vocational Training, the European Commission, Cedefop and ETF delegates, social partners and experts.

EU Directors General Conference on Higher Education

24-26 November 2002, Odense

Objectives

The objective of the conference is knowledge-sharing among Directors General of Higher Education in the EU member states and the applicant countries. These meetings are held twice a year in the country having the Presidency in the European Union. The discussions and conclusions of the conference will hopefully have an inspiring influence on initiatives and decisions in the educational area which are to be taken in the EU member states and the applicant countries.

By focusing on the subjects mentioned the conference aims furthermore to put the positive educational and innovative effects of cooperation between universities and for instance trade and industry on a European agenda.

Themes:

The themes of the conference will be:

Universities in the innovative society
Governance at Universities

The topics are related to each other in the way that fulfilment of the task of a university in the innovative society requires an adequate system of governance at universities.

The topics are basic to EU policies on research (European Research Area, 6th Framework Programme) and on education (Mobility Programmes, Bologna process).

Participants:

The target group of the conference is Directors General of Higher Education and Departments of Higher Education in the European Union and the applicant countries.
